About Chuppah Handmade

What does Chuppah Handmade do?

Chuppah Handmade makes you a personalized chuppah — a quilt — for your wedding day. And not just something for the day, but an heirloom to enjoy the rest of your marriage and pass down to future generations.

How did Chuppah Handmade get started?

Alexis, the owner and designer, has been a quilter for many years. When she got engaged in 2022, she knew she wanted to quilt her own chuppah. The beautiful design was a huge hit, and formed the backdrop for the entire wedding (see photos above and below). It even influenced the design of the ketubah. Alexis loves quilts (and weddings!) so much, so she decided to help others celebrate their love with their own chuppah quilt.

Why quilts? How Jewish is this?

Quilts are made to be used. Quilts are made to last. Quilts are love you can cuddle. And what’s more special than a unique quilt made just for you? It’s for your wedding day and everyday thereafter: to snuggle under it together, or to showcase in a prominent place in your home.

Jewish tradition encourages the beautifying of ritual objects to enhance a ceremony’s meaningful, known as hiddur mitzvah. As the chuppah is the symbolic first “home” of a couple, it should physically reflect the beauty created by joining you and your beloved together.

About Alexis, The Artist

Alexis, the daughter of a professional artist, has been creating art her entire life. She’s worked professionally as a graphic designer for over twenty years, providing marketing, branding, and creative direction for small businesses. Today she works as the Directer of Product Design for a cybersecurity company. She quilts, draws, paints, and reads every day.

Alexis married the love of her life in 2023, and there came the inspiration to start Chuppah Handmade. Her husband, Jason Harris, a Jewish writer and educator, is the creator and host of the podcast Jew Oughta Know. He’s taken hundreds of people on trips around Israel and started the podcast to answer all their questions about Jewish and Israeli history.

Alexis and Jason live with their young daughter and two cats in the Bay Area, California.
